The Sabah Tourism Awards was introduced in 1997 to celebrate the industry’s achievements and commitment to excellence and is held biennially. Nominees include contributors to the State and national tourism development in various fields, namely frontliners, agencies, hotels, resorts, a variety of businesses as well as the media.

Each category has a selected panel of judges headed by the Chairman. The judging is carried out over a span of 3 to 6 months, and points are awarded based on their respective criteria.

The brilliantly colored spider with silvery hair on the carapace sits head down in the centre of the web, and holds its legs in pairs in such a way that they appear to be aligned to the four arms of the letter 'X'.
